Great video. Where can I get more detailed information on how to keep the muzzle on target while firing? Is there a resource I could consult in book form? I won’t be able to take a class for a while so some book study and range time is the best I can do right now. On the other hand I don’t want to cultivate bad habits so if you don’t have anything you think is good then I’ll save it until I can get to a class.
Thanks also for the eye protection article on lucky gunner. I bought new, better glasses because of it and was able to convince my buddy to do the same thing. It didn’t take much convincing, thanks to the data.

Love the coda! And, would love to hear your thoughts on how to best control a carbine through all the phases of recoil when you’re comfortable doing so. (Does this mean you’re considering offering training?)

Yes, working on setting up training classes.

Interesting. I’m planning on a build using an 18″ barrel and am unsure whether to use a rifle or mid length gas system for this very reason. Then i suppose the buffer system would have to match also.

Rifle gas system if you want to focus more on recoil control. Yes, try the Vltor A5.

LOL “useless” I always ask for pie and have yet to receive any.

One thing I’ve been noticing more and more is the torque you see on some of the rifles in the video. It seems like it’s even more noticeable in the rifles I see at the 3 gun matches I shoot, since a lot of them have had all three phases of recoil attacked with muzzle devices, tuned/adjustable gas systems and light weight reciprocating parts.
Any thoughts on that?

Torque? On what axis?
September 17th, 2012 - 17:34
Rotating on the bore. Not entirely sure if it’s the rifle accelerating against the rifling or what, but rifles seem to torque, especially lighter recoiling rifles. Like I said, watch the video and you can see some of them rotate slightly when he fires. It’s easier to spot if you watch the bottom of the magazine.

What I see is that HK turd bending/flexing like Arnold in a bad movie – that could be the “torque” M. Sage was referencing.
The rifle was not designed to have an op rod/piston scabbed on top of it, and it shows very well in this video. Thanks for showing this to all the kool-aid drinkers.

For any who are seeing to learn about recoil control and cannot, for whatever reason, attend a class in the near future. The Magpul Carbine II BluRay/DVD video set is very helpful. Also, “Make Ready w/ Travis Haley” on Pantaeo Productions is good as well. Best recoil control is achieved with proper posture and proper placement of the support arm.
Wes at MSTN is experimenting with a 17″, rifle gas length barrel that currently wears a SF MB556K. Extending the length of the gas system AND reducing dwell time (length of barrel in front of gas port) is where this is at. It’s also why a 14.5″ middy shoots a little more smoothly than it’s 16″ middy counterpart.
The Vltor A5 recoil system is God’s gift to the shooting sports. If somebody says they “can’t tell a difference” between the A5 and a regular setup, they aren’t running the gun hard enough. It’s that good.

Well, that attitude is why he’ll never actually win any competition, ever.

Hey now, being the only person in that class still counts as a win… I just won the PCC division at ACTS, sure I was the only shooter in PCC and pretty much came in last overall but dammit, a win is a win
Oh, and I like the video.

LOL!

Wow, I cant tell if that guy who wrote that is trolling or just under educated..

Frankly, I hope he keeps writing articles about me. It is a source of great amusement.
